ISA managers gain email channel for annual returns
HMRC's ISA annual-returns specification page now presents secure electronic file transfer and email as filing channels instead of mandating a flat text file via the Secure Data Exchange Service.

ISA managers can now submit their annual returns of information either by secure electronic file transfer or by emailGOV. The guidance page for the electronic text file specification previously told managers to file an electronic flat text file using the Secure Data Exchange Service
GOV; its lead paragraph now presents the two channels side by side without naming a single mandated route
GOV. The change sits alongside rewording that describes the page as explaining how an ISA manager submits Individual Savings Account annual returns to HMRC.
The filing obligation itself is unchanged. A manager must make a return of information to HMRC within 60 days of either 5 April each year, so that returns are due by 4 June, or the date on which the manager ceases to qualify or act as an ISA manager. HMRC sends a reminder at the end of February of the tax year in which the return is due. The return must cover the period from the manager's approval date or the last reporting date, whichever is later, and must report details of all ISAs and Junior ISAs managed during the period, including ISAs opened with matured Child Trust Fund money, ISAs transferred in, current-year subscriptions on partial transfers, and closed ISAs, with each ISA of a multi-ISA investor reported separately.
Returns of information may be made on either the ISA electronic flat text specification or the HMRC spreadsheet, and must conform to the specification and format HMRC describes. A non-conforming return may be rejected, in which case the manager may be treated as having failed to make a return or as having made an incorrect one. Details of how to submit the return are in the notice HMRC issues to the manager. Simple enquiries such as whether a return has been received or passed go to tpi.c@hmrc.gov.uk, while requests for additional sub numbers, closure of a sub number or questions about submitting go to DA.Enquiries@hmrc.gov.uk. Failure to make a return, or making an incorrect one, can attract a penalty under Schedule 23 to the Finance Act 2011GOV. Lifetime ISAs stay outside this route and are reported through the Lifetime ISA Application Programming Interface.
Legal basis: HMRC guidance on returns of information for ISA managers (reporting dates, content and submission channels); Schedule 23 to the Finance Act 2011 (penalties).
File the ISA annual return by 4 June 2026 through either channel named in the updated specification, and confirm the submission route in the notice HMRC issued to you.
