Individuals who trade currency pairs, hold accounts in foreign currency or dispose of claims denominated in foreign currency must compute each capital gain or loss in Swedish kronorSkatteverket and report it in appendix K4
Skatteverket. Gains are taxed at 100 per cent.
Skatteverket Losses on currency and listed claims are fully offsettable against other capital income
Skatteverket; for unlisted claims the value-change part of a loss is offsettable at 70 per cent
Skatteverket while the exchange-rate part is offsettable at 100 per cent
Skatteverket. Currency and listed claims go in K4 section C and unlisted claims in section D, with the exchange-rate part of an unlisted loss in section C. Figures are never pre-filled, and gains and losses must be reported even where no control statement was received.
Disposal triggers taxation: selling foreign notes and coins, exchanging into kronor or another currency, withdrawing from a foreign-currency account, paying with foreign currency, receiving amortisation, selling or redeeming a foreign-currency claim, trading currency pairs, and trading futures, options or similar contracts linked to foreign currency or a currency indexSkatteverket. Travel currency stays outside: exchanging currency for private living costs during a trip abroad of no more than six months is not reported
Skatteverket.
Timing depends on the form of disposal. A forex-pair position is taxed in the year the transaction closesSkatteverket, with transaction fees and any rollover fee included and every amount converted to kronor; each closed sale is taxed separately and repeated purchases of one pair use the average method. Amortisation works differently: part-repayments, including account withdrawals, are matched against cost base krona-for-krona and nothing is reported until the full cost base is used up; a loss deduction arises only once the loss is final. A full redemption or sale is reported for the year it happens.
Conversion uses the actual rate when the exchange happens on the purchase or disposal day or within 30 days of disposalSkatteverket; otherwise the Riksbank rate for that day applies, or the most recently published rate
Skatteverket, and for currencies without a rate the average of the day's quoted buy and sell rates from an official list may be used. Selling an asset for foreign-currency consideration can require three computations — the asset, the claim on the buyer, and the later exchange
Skatteverket — unless payment arrives within days or the proceeds are exchanged within 30 days of the sale
Skatteverket: then the exchange-day rate sets the proceeds and the claim and exchange results merge into the asset result. A claim's result combines value change and exchange-rate movement in one computation; partial sales of a claim built up through several loans use the average method, while repayments deduct the repaid amount in kronor. Swapping currencies counts as a disposal, with the kronor value received as sale price and new cost base, plus transaction costs on both sides. Bank and custody liquidity balances are claims on the bank, so trading through a foreign custody account needs two computations, one for the securities and one for the liquidity balance.
Securities institutions and other actors file control statements on securities disposals, closed option and futures transactions and foreign-currency tradingSkatteverket; foreign companies with a Swedish branch or cross-border operations here file as well
Skatteverket, as does anyone intermediating payments to or from Sweden above 150 000 kronor
Skatteverket. The guidance no longer carries its own worked example for debts in foreign currency; the SKV 2191 helper form and related debt-loss position statements remain linked.
Legal basis: 41 kap. 2 § and 44 kap. 3-4 §§ inkomstskattelagen (1999:1229)Skatteverket
Skatteverket, applied in Skatteverkets ställningstagande 8-1027761 on sales for foreign-currency consideration and the 30-day rule
Skatteverket.
Compute each foreign-currency gain or loss in kronor and report it in K4 — section C for currency and listed claims, section D for unlisted claims — deferring amortisation until the full cost base is used.
