1,882 registered company insolvencies were recorded in England and Wales in September 2026GOV. That total was 4% lower than 1,953 in August 2026
GOV and 5% lower than 1,973 in September 2025
GOV. Monthly totals for each of the first nine months of 2026 were below the average for the preceding three years.
The September total comprised 341 compulsory liquidations, 1,420 creditors' voluntary liquidations, 102 administrations and 19 company voluntary arrangements, with no receivership appointments. Creditors' voluntary liquidations were at a similar level to August 2026 and below the September 2025 level, while compulsory liquidations were higher than in both comparison months. Administrations were 44% lower than in August 2026GOV and 20% lower than in September 2025.
Administration numbers have been volatile in recent months because more than 250 connected companies in the Real Estate sector entered administration between March and August 2026GOV. That cluster lifted administration counts through that period
GOV, so month-to-month movements in administrations do not reflect a change in the underlying rate for unrelated companies.
One in 200 companies entered insolvency in the 12 months to 30 September 2026GOV, at a rate of 49.9 per 10,000 companies on the effective register
GOV. That compares with 52.8 per 10,000 in the 12 months to 30 September 2025
GOV. The rate is calculated on a 12-month rolling basis as a proportion of companies on the effective register, which smooths single-month volatility and shows the longer-term trend.
The rolling rate remains above the lows of 2020 and 2021 but far below the 2008-09 recession peak of 113.1 per 10,000 companiesGOV. The number of companies on the effective register has more than doubled since that peak, so a similar number of insolvencies now produces a much lower rate.
