Permanent Lithuanian residents who hold or open an investment account (investicinė sąskaita) can now declare the account late or correct account-declaration data after the standard filing deadline.VMI Under Order No. VA-69 of 16 October 2026
VMI, the Valstybinė mokesčių inspekcija prie Lietuvos Respublikos finansų ministerijos removed the prior bar in the Taisyklės under which the account had to be notified no later than 1 May of the year following the tax period
E TAR and declaration data could no longer be corrected once that date passed
E TAR.
The removal is linked to the provisions of Lietuvos Respublikos mokesčių administravimo įstatymo 80 straipsnis on correction of declaration errors. Its stated purpose is to keep the investment-account regime accessible to residents who failed to declare the account or entered its data incorrectly by the income-tax return deadline, by allowing them to remedy the omission or error afterwards.
The correction opportunity is narrowly framed. It covers fixing declaration mistakes and belatedly fulfilling the declaration duty.VMI It does not permit using a late declaration or correction to avoid payment of tax or to choose retrospectively a more favourable tax treatment after the outcome is known.
VMI Advisers should document that the filing corrects a genuine error or omission rather than re-characterising past transactions for tax advantage.
The change on late declaration and correction applies when calculating and declaring gyventojų pajamų mokestis for 2025 and later tax periods.VMI A resident who did not declare an investment account for 2025, or declared it with incorrect data, may therefore still regularise the position under the amended Taisyklės when the 2025 liability is computed and declared.
VMI
Separately, residents must now also submit information on financial-instrument sale income received through the investment accountVMI and on interest received through it
VMI. This reporting duty covers the data needed to compute income tax on income earned through the account and applies when calculating and declaring income tax for 2026 and later tax periods
VMI. Returns for 2025 therefore fall under the liberalised declaration regime but without the expanded sale-income and interest reporting
VMI, while returns for 2026 carry both
VMI.
The amendments also supplement the provisions on retention periods for data, including personal data, and on making that data available to data recipients. The letter does not set out new retention periods in figures; filers and financial institutions holding account records should follow the updated Taisyklės text on how long declaration and supporting data must be kept and to whom it may be provided.
In practice, an individual investor or the adviser preparing the return should identify the account treated as an investment account, ensure its declaration data is complete, file or correct the declaration even where the standard deadline was missedVMI, and, for 2026 onwards, include financial-instrument sale income and interest earned through the account in the information supplied to the tax administrator
VMI.
