All remuneration from employment in Jersey is taxableGOV and must be declared on the income tax return
GOV. That starting point covers wages, overtime pay, holiday pay, bonuses and commissions, alongside tips and gratuities, income from labour-only sub-contracting, redundancy and termination payments and payment in lieu of notice.
Employees who receive tips face a practical record-keeping duty. Where tips are not included in gross pay from the employer, the recipient must keep a record of the amounts received and include that income on the tax returnGOV. The condition turns on inclusion in gross pay: amounts already flowing through gross pay need no separate tip entry
GOV, while amounts outside it must be captured by the employee and returned
GOV.
The scope of that duty is no longer limited to cash. The previous wording described cash tipsGOV; the current wording covers tips
GOV. In practice an employee who previously treated only notes and coins as in scope must now treat all tips outside gross pay the same way, keeping contemporaneous amounts and returning the total. The change aligns the tips section with the employment-income list, which has always listed tips and gratuities without a cash qualifier.
The same return discipline applies to other small amounts earned outside the main job. Casual and weekend work, typically small one-off cash-in-hand amounts from ad hoc work outside and unconnected with normal day-to-day work, must be declared.GOV Where that work becomes a regular source of income, the individual is treated as self-employed and declares it in the self-employment section, paying the tax and any social security contributions due.
Two nearby boundaries matter for hospitality and service staff. Employment income is taxed on a receipt basis, so backdated pay is taxable in the year it is received. Token gifts or token gratuities given entirely at the discretion of the employer may be tax free by concession under Personal tax concession P10, a narrow exception distinct from customer tips that reward service. Termination or redundancy payments remain taxableGOV, with the first £50,000 payable tax free, and payments resulting from injury, death or disability are exempt without limit.
For payroll, the message is to check what gross pay already captures. Where a tronc, pool or direct customer payment bypasses payroll, the employee record is the compliance pointGOV. Employers and advisers should brief tipped staff to log each receipt, retain the record for the return, and distinguish tips already in gross pay from those that must be added.
The charge rests on the Income Tax (Jersey) Law 1961 tax on the full amount of emoluments of an office or employmentJerseylaw, applied through Revenue Jersey's Employment income and tax guidance.
Tell tipped staff to log every tip not in gross pay and add the total to the Jersey tax return.
