Companies House guidance on software filing now states there will be no transition period for the mandatory software-filing of accounts: from 1 April 2028 all companies must file their accounts using commercial software, whether they file themselves or through a professional such as an accountantGOV. Web and paper-based services close for accounts filings from that date
GOV, and any accounts due after it, including revised accounts, must be filed using software. Web services remain available for other statutory information.
The revised page moves the accounts-filing section to the top and adds three practical warnings. Companies that already use software to prepare or file accounts should check with their provider that it can support the new requirements, because not all software supports the iXBRL tagging needed for digital accounts. Companies that hire a professional remain legally responsible for their accounts, records and performance, and should check the professional is prepared for the change. Companies filing their own accounts are told to identify the type of accounts, find suitable software, and have it in place before 1 April 2028.
Companies filing package accounts with Companies House can continue to use that service after 1 April 2028GOV, but must use software that can save the accounts in ZIP file format
GOV. The underlying filing-accounts guidance confirms the scope of that route — package accounts must be ZIP-formatted and iXBRL-tagged using software
GOV, covering UKSEF accounts for listed companies, Welsh accounts with English translation, group package accounts under sections 400 and 401, community interest company accounts, audit-exempt and dormant-exempt subsidiary accounts, limited partnership accounts and overseas company accounts.
When accounts are filed with commercial software, Companies House receives and processes them in inline extensible Business Reporting Language (iXBRL) format, a worldwide technical standard combining HTML with machine-readable tags so documents can be read by machines and humans. Filing through software goes through the extensible markup language gateway, with benefits the guidance lists as no postage costs, cheaper fee-bearing filings, better register data quality, faster secure delivery with immediate acknowledgement, automatic acceptance-or-rejection confirmation, fewer errors and a reduced risk of late-filing penalties.
To file using software a company needs its company authentication code, a presenter account with presenter ID and code, and, where fee-bearing documents are filed, a Companies House credit account; those filing charge documents for other companies must register as a lender. Some commercial software can file with HMRC at the same time, and deadlines for Companies House accounts and the HMRC Company Tax Return can differ.
Legal basis: Companies House guidance "Using software to file your company's information" and "Filing your Companies House accounts", reflecting the accounts-filing changes effective 1 April 2028.
Check your accounts software supports iXBRL filing and ZIP-format package accounts, and have it in place before 1 April 2028; if you use an accountant, confirm they are prepared.
